How to sign a PDF online for free, step by step
Sign a PDF online for free with an electronic signature. Upload the PDF, add your Signers and send. They sign without an account, even on their phone.
You have a contract, an offer, or a non-disclosure agreement as a PDF and you need someone's signature. You do not have to print it, sign it by hand, scan it, and send it back. With Signit, signing the PDF happens online: upload the document, add the people who must sign, and follow the outcome in the app.
Signit is free for up to 10 Envelopes sent per month. An Envelope is one agreement: exactly one PDF, its Signers, and the signing evidence.
What you need to sign a PDF online
- A PDF you are allowed to send, up to 25 MiB and 200 pages. Each Envelope has exactly one PDF.
- Each Signer's name and email address.
- A Signit account for yourself, as the Sender. You sign in with Google or with a code sent to your email, without a password.
Signers do not need an account. They get a personal link by email and sign straight from the browser.
Step 1: upload the PDF
In the app, choose New envelope and upload the PDF. Signit immediately creates a private, autosaved Draft. No email goes out yet, so you can prepare everything at your own pace.
Step 2: add the Signers
Add each person with their name and email address. If you must sign too, check Include myself: you will appear as a regular Signer. The same address cannot appear twice in one Envelope.
When you add a Signer, Signit searches the document for that person's signature spots and places their fields there. If it finds none, drag a field onto the page yourself or choose Use a signature page instead, so everyone signs on an added page. You can also ask for text or checkboxes that the Signer fills in before signing. The full details are in Send an Envelope.
Step 3: choose the signing order
Parallel means everyone can sign at the same time. It is the fast option and suits most agreements. Choose Sequential only when one stage must finish before the next one starts, for example when the company director signs only after the client has signed.
Step 4: review and send
Write a clear subject and a short message. Check every signature field on the document. When the Send summary says everything is ready, choose Send for signature once.
Every eligible Signer receives an email invitation. If you prefer another channel, copy the signing link from the Signer's row and send it over WhatsApp or SMS. It is the same personal link as in the email.
How the other person signs, including on a phone
The Signer opens the link on a computer or a phone. The signing page runs in the browser, so there is no app to install. Then they:
- Read the whole PDF. The places that need their signature are marked Sign here.
- Type their full name and choose Adopt and sign. The name appears in the field in a handwriting-style font.
- Sign the remaining fields and fill in any requested answers.
- Confirm consent and choose Finish.
If they do not agree with the document, they choose Decline to sign. Declining stops the Envelope, and you are notified. The complete steps are in Sign or decline.
What you get at the end
The Documents page shows what is in Draft, what is waiting for signatures, and what is done. When every Signer has finished, Signit prepares the final PDF and a Certificate of Completion. The certificate is an evidence report: it shows who signed, when, and which events were recorded along the way. It is issued in English so anyone who needs to check it later can read it. See Follow the outcome.
What kind of electronic signature you get
Signit provides a simple electronic signature under the eIDAS Regulation: the Signer's typed name, their explicit consent, and a record of events. It is not an advanced or qualified electronic signature, it does not use a digital certificate, and it does not apply a cryptographic signature to the PDF.
For most contracts between people and companies, and for offers or non-disclosure agreements, a simple signature is enough. For ANAF, ONRC, REGES, or anything that requires a qualified signature, use a qualified trust service provider. The differences are explained in Simple, advanced or qualified electronic signature.

Frequently asked questions
Can I sign a PDF for free?
Yes. Signit is free for up to 10 Envelopes sent per month. Signers do not need an account to sign.
Can I sign a PDF on my phone?
Yes. The signing link opens in the phone's browser. You read the document, type your name, and finish just as on a computer.
Can I sign the document I am sending?
Yes. Check Include myself when you add the Signers. You sign like any of them, and the Envelope completes only after everyone has signed.
What do I do if the signing link has expired?
The link is personal and expires. Ask the Sender for the latest invitation or a new Envelope. Do not use a link someone else received.
